SCOTS (ALBANAIGH)
Presentation

People descended from the Celts of Great Britain (Britons, Picts) and from the Gaels, united within the Kingdom of Scotland. Today, they form an autonomous community within the United Kingdom.

The flag shows the saltire (or stauros), which reproduces the quadripartite layout of the four traditional provinces — Gáedhil (the Gaels of the coast and western isles), Cruithin Forthri (the southern Picts), Cruithin a Tuath (the northern Picts), and Cumbria to the south — plus the Centre (Sgáin, Scone).
It is said to have appeared in the sky during a victorious battle of the Scots and Picts against the Northumbrians, sometime between 820 and 834 — a historicization of an ancient celestial sign.

The thistle appeared in the 13th century as the floral symbol of the Scots.

Here we represent the national saltire, accompanied by ogam characters (from ogam, the writing system of the Gaelic world — oigheam in Scotland) spelling the ancient name of Scotland, ALBA (which also appears in the name of the unifying king, Kenneth MacAlpin).
