Gaelic people of the Isle of Man, Ellan Vannin.
According to a tradition from Man and Leinster, the first man of the Isle of Man rolled on three legs like a wheel through the mist (J. Rhys, Celtic Heathendom, London, 1886, pp. 364–365). The mythological patron of the island, Manannan mac y Leir, is a benevolent and radiant god who dwells in the over-sea land of immortality:
“Manannan Beg mac y Leirr, fer vannee yn Ellan, Bannee shin as nyn maatey…”
— “Dear Manannán, son of the ocean, who blesses our island, bless us and our boat as well…”
The emblem of Man is the heraldic triquetra, formed of three legs, armed and spurred — the emblem of the kings of Man in the 13th century. It symbolizes the visible course of the sun with its three moments: morning twilight, zenith, and evening twilight.
In the drawing shown here, the sun makes the symbol explicit.
