Presentation
European people of Maltese language (Malti), derived from Sicilian Arabic and with a vocabulary influenced by Italian superstrata, later by English. Italian remains a known and used language. We place this people among the Romanic group for reasons of culture and civilization.
Roman (its inhabitants were socii in 218), then Byzantine, Aghlabid, Norman (1090), and Italian (Italian remained the official language of the archipelago for a long time), the island of Malta became the fief of an Order of chivalry organized into eight nations or “languages”: Provence, Auvergne, France, Aragon, Castile, Italy, England, and Germany. It successfully withstood the ordeal of the Great Siege against the Turks in 1565. It has been independent since 1964. Gozo preserved its political identity in connection with the Kingdom of Naples until the English occupation in 1800.
The colors of Malta are said to date back to the Norman Count Roger, who expelled the Arab-Muslims in 1090. The state flag reprises the colors of the coat of arms.
The so-called “Maltese cross” is the linear symbol of the Maltese people, consecrated by usage.
