Presentation
The Faroe Islands, the "Sheep Islands", first Norwegian (1035) and later Danish (1380), were settled by Norwegians who refused to submit to the tyranny of the Christian king Harold (9th c.). The Faroese form an ethno-linguistic link between the Norwegians and the Icelanders. They gained autonomy in 1948.
The coat of arms of the Faroes features the heraldic ram.
The emblem adopted here is a stylized rendering of the ram’s head. The colors are those of the flag.
Below is a variant incorporating the sign of the Aries constellation, to which we add the two runes F and O, justified by the etymology from faer "sheep" and öer "islands".
