Gatekeepers of the Baltic and the North Sea, the Danes (Dani, Danoi, 550) — "those of the Forest March" (Dania, Danmark, 600) — established their authority as early as the 6th century and gave their name to the various peoples of Jutland and the islands. Their sovereigns ruled over all of Scandinavia in the 14th century. The Danes constitute a minority in German Schleswig. Greenland is a constituent country of the kingdom.
Denmark is the homeland of Nikolai F. S. Grundtvig (1783–1872), founder of the Folk High Schools devoted to the self-education of the people, true "schools for life", Skolen for Livet, in opposition to the official, deficient "black school".
The chronicle says that the Danebrog flag fell from the sky in 1219, a presage of the Danish victory at Lindanaes. Its use on land has been official since 1854.
Since the so-called Danebrog cross is insufficiently distinctive, we here append to it a combination of the runes D and M, justified by the etymology of the ethnonym Dan- and mörk ("march"), and by the practice of acronymy.
