The Gascons are an Aquitano-Roman people who share with the Basques the same ethnonym (Uascones, Gascones, Euska-).
Gascony (Gasconha) forms a transition zone with the Hispano-Romance domain. It extends between the Ocean, the Pyrenees, and the Garonne, which it slightly overflows in several places. Its regions — Biarn, Xalòssa, Armanhac, Coserans, Comenge, Bigòrra, Libournés, Bux, Bòrn, Médòc and others — mostly belonged to the former Généralité of Gascony or Central Gascony, of Béarn, and in part to Guyenne (with Bordeaux) and to the western part of the Toulousain. The Vath d’Aran (Valley of Aran) lies within the Généralité of Catalonia.
The Gascon flag is a white saltire on red - the Sent-André (St. Andrew’s Cross) - attested at least since the mid-20th century.
A sheaf of wheat bound together appears on the arms of the Généralité of Gascony.
A graphic symbol of the Gascons is the florenced and flaming cross (notably promoted by the Conservatory of the Heritage of Gascony). It is attested in the 17th century in the Gascon circle of Henry of Navarre.
In it we find the fundamental idea of those star-shaped signs — engravings of Pyrenean art, turning suns, flamboyant crosses — which flourish in the folk art of the pays or parçans of Gascony.
This flaming cross evokes lo larèr, the hearth of the family home, whose importance is great in Gascon country.
