Confoederati Helvetici : Confederation of cantons whose population belongs to the Romance and Germanic linguistic families.
A confederation of independent cantons born from the perpetual pact of 1291, Switzerland is a community formed of four nations united by history and customs. It brings together Francoprovençals (or Arpitans), —Italians, Romansh (Rumantsch), and —Germans, all defined by their Swiss allegiance. They are the descendants of Romanized Helvetii and of the Germanic peoples—Burgundians and Alemanni (from the 4th and 5th centuries onward).
A particular region of Romania is the southern Alpine Arc: four centuries after the retreat of Rome, the Lex Romana Curiensis (> Chur) continued to irrigate the valleys of the Retia Prima, where the Romance language persisted—in the Grisons, the valleys of the Sol and the Non, the Dolomites, and Friuli. The culture specific to these communities reached its full brilliance in the 16th century in connection with the democratic history of the Alpine valleys.
The armed crossbow surmounted by the apple (image of the sun), taken from the founding myth of the Confederation, constitutes the most appropriate graphic symbol for the federation.
N.B.: The Valaisan community of the Southern Alps uses a flag close to that of the Swiss Walsers. The ten stars represent the communities of the Aosta Valley and the provinces of Vercelli and Novara. The coat of arms of the Walsers is surmounted by a ‘figure four’ with a double crossbar.
